Opera creation based on Jean Rhys’ novel of the same name: it explains how Rochester, the character from Charlotte Bronte’s novel Jane Eyre, came to marry the woman who subsequently became known as the 'mad woman in the attic'. Composed by Brian Howard, conducted by Mark Summerbell, directed by Douglas Horton with Lyndon Terracini as Rochester and Miriam Gormley as Antoinette. World Premiere by Chamber Made Opera at the Merlyn Theatre, Melbourne 1997.
“The first part of the opera is set in the West Indies, and it is this section that gives the greatest sense of place and movement, vocal variety and musical interest… The supporting roles of various knowing servants and hangers-on are sung with great conviction and some humor by Lotte Latukefu, Deborah Wai Kopohe, Brian Green, Sani Muliaumaseali’i…”
